In the last 24 hours, we have seen a huge increase in the number email-borne threats - these emails are coming into email addresses with a financial leaning - ie, anything relating to billing, invoicing or payments - all the emails contain hidden calls to websites with infection vectors for windows PC- so...

be careful . . .

do not open emails from people you do not know - but even the "preview" in Outlook and some other email programs can load this threat!

keep your antivirus up to date

update your windows and other software

Historically, few viruses have been written to attack Mac-based operating systems. But as the popularity of these devices has increased, so has the popularity of Mac-targeted malware. Regardless of whether your organization uses Windows-based PCs or Macs or a mix of both, you need a solution that provides protection for all operating systems.
Continue reading "Hackers don’t discriminate: Viruses attack all platform users"

As everyone knows, no single protection system is 100% - and even with a layered defense, it is possible for a threat to arrive on your PC (or Mac) without detection - the final step between you an POTENTIAL infections, is you!

This very morning, I received just such a threat - it arrives in an email and was not picked up by ESET as an email threat. The email came to a publicly available email address - and it there were some obvious clues that this was not a legitimate email...
Clues in the email:
1. from a company, business, or person we didn't recognize
2. to a publicly available email address we only expect email on a particular topic (and the topic was not correct)
Facebook users ought to be more careful about their online security after the birth of the Ramnit worm. For the unknown, Ramnit was first discovered in April 2010 when the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) described Ramnit as “Win32/Ramnit is a family of multi-component malware that infects Windows executable files, Microsoft Office files and HTML files. Win32/Ramnit spreads to removable drives, steals sensitive information such as saved FTP credentials and browser cookies. The malware may also open a backdoor to await instructions from a remote attacker.” More than 17.3 % of malicious software infections trace their origin to the Ramnit worm, according to Symantec.
Continue reading "The Ramnit worm steals more than 45,000 Facebook credentials "

The best way to protect yourself from an online financial scam is to diligently check your bank accounts. At least, until now.

Israeli-based Security firm Trusteer has found an elaborate new computer virus that not only helps fraudsters steal money from bank accounts -- it also covers its tracks.

Think of a crime plot involving a spy who plans to break into a high-security building and begins by swapping out security camera video so guards don't notice anything is amiss. Known as a surveillance camera hack, the technique has been used in dozens of movies.

A new version of the widely prevalent SpyEye Trojan horse works much the same way, only it swaps out banking Web pages rather than video, preventing account holders from noticing that their money is gone.
Continue reading "New virus raids your bank account - but you won't notice"

Passwords, Stratfor, and Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion

Newton's 3rd law is often stated as "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Actually, what Newton actually said is a little more complex* than that, but this article isn't about physics (or else I'd leave the discussion to someone better qualified).

The Internet, despite its grounding in the physical world of hardware and digital media, is (from my end of the telescope, anyway) primarily a psychosocial entity and much harder to define and measure, but even in the mental universe, the third law applies to some extent, though we might want to drop the word "equal". Here's a very specific instance that we might put like this: for every action taken to promote security, there is a potential negative consequence.
Continue reading "Passwords, Stratfor, and Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion"

Whether you need 1 computer protected - or 100 - a $25 discount from your credit card company isn't to be sniffed at - and that's exactly what American Express is offering if you purchase from a qualified small business on 11/26/2011 - and yes, we're a qualified small business.

That means you could purchase a single computer license at $39.99 and your final cost would be... yes, $14.99 - how ridiculously cheap is that?

Better still, protect all your computers, and stretch your $25 American Express further...
