ESET researchers have been tracking the TDL4 botnet for a long time, and now we have noticed a new phase in its evolution. Based on the analysis of its components we can say that some of those components have been rewritten from scratch (kernel-mode driver, user-mode payload) while some (specifically, some bootkit components) remain the same as in the previous versions. These changes might suggest one of the following: either the team developing the botnet has been changed, or TDL4 developers have started selling a bootkit builder to other cybercrime groups.

The dropper (Win32/Olmasco.R) that we have analyzed sends copious tracing information to the C&C (Command & Control server) during the installation of the rootkit onto the system. In the event of any error, it sends a comprehensive error message which gives the malware developers enough information to determine the cause of the fault. All this suggests that this bot is still under development.

We also found a form of countermeasure against bot trackers based on virtual machines: during the installation of the malware it checks on whether the dropper is being run in a virtual machine environment and this information is sent to the C&C. Of course, malware that checks on whether it is running in a virtual environment is far from unusual in modern malware, but in this form it's kind of novel for TDL.

Among the latest TDSS modifications that have attracted our attention are the way the rootkit infects the system, and changes in the hidden file system layout.

The first thing to know about any antivirus or antimalware solution - nothing is 100%

We all have to realize, that the criminals who are trying to get malware onto your computers, are CONSTANTLY evolving, in a way that enables their malicious software to get past the gate-keeper - the AV or AntiMalware solution you have on your computer.

The battle between criminal and antivirus vendors will not stop - and it goes on 24x7x365.25 (you have to remember that leap-year).

So - having got that out of the way - at some point... you MAY get infected, even if you have safe practices and you have up-to-date antivirus... it CAN happen...

And it happened to one of our customers yesterday..... the phone rings and the customer is not upset, but fairly calmly describes the problem.. so we initiate a remote login session - which enables us to take over the computer and start running some diagnostics.... learn what happened next...
ESET Smart Security was a major step from ESET Antivirus - the addition of a firewall and Anti-Spam were tremendous improvements - and a valuable resource for parents and even end-users who might need a little more than the award winning antivirus and anti-spyware protection alone.

Parents need a little more when it comes to the protection of the children and teens... who are prone to clicking on things you might not want them to... whether that be adult sites, those with information on criminal activity or sites of questionable value.

Parental controls in ESET Smart security offer three base levels - Adult, Teenager or Child. Further control is offered in a number of categories from:

Technology, Entertainment, Health, Lifestyle, News, Shopping, Business Services, adult materials, education, Information Technology, Politics, Religion and Law, Gambling, Kid's Interest and more....
